I Am, With You
So soon I will be vowing
to the woman I love and will love
to always be with her
to the end of our days,
until death tears us asunder
and our temporal, fervent promise
is fulfilled, to serve each other
all our lives, as Christ shows us.
Will anyone never forsake?
Who can promise such totality,
between shaky wills and untold
circumstance? No ruler, no mentor,
no brother, no lover, no friend
can vow such a thing in completion.
All are taken up and snatched in an instant.
We are never ready for the loss.
Put not your trust in princes.
Have no stock stored up to keep you safe.
Our hope in mankind falls apart.
A center set in our systems cannot hold—
but one, but one, the three in one,
O Mystery Divine and Whole,
The fount-head of all Being,
The Maker, The Teacher, The Helper—
He alone is and is and is and always is.
Almighty Father, most Worthy Son,
Gentle and Lowly Spirit, my friend‚
to you alone is the praise
and from you alone is our hope and
our stay through all the shifting tides
of life and death and strife and love.
Do not be far from us.
